The renovation of the lecture hall at Laurentian University’s School of Architecture presented a unique opportunity to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal. Architects LGA Architectural Partners were tasked with updating the space to create an engaging environment conducive to learning while ensuring the design elements were cohesive with existing architectural features. The project highlighted the importance of durability, custom design, and innovative installation solutions.

Matching Existing Design Elements
The Challenge: The wall panels needed to complement the distinctive diamond-shaped perforation pattern of the custom balustrade panels in the lobby.
The Solution: Au.diLux Fibre Cement panels were chosen for their resilience and versatility in design. Local waterjet companies were engaged to precisely cut matching diamond-shaped perforations in the panels. This technique ensured that the integrity of the panels remained uncompromised while effectively mirroring the aesthetic of the existing balustrade.
Installation and Lighting Considerations
The Challenge: The design called for halo lighting around the wall panels, which necessitated a standoff installation to create the desired effect.
The Solution: To accommodate the halo lighting, custom hardware was developed. Concealed safety fasteners were manufactured to securely attach the panels to the wooden structure behind them. This innovative approach allowed for the halo lights to be installed without compromising the aesthetic quality of the panels or the safety of the installation.
The use of a French cleat installation system further ensured that the panels were securely mounted while allowing for easy access if needed. The custom hardware provided the university with peace of mind, ensuring that students could not remove the panels from their installation points.
